The summer has officially begun! I am currently on the plane from Atlanta to Johannesburg, South Africa. From there we will make a connection to Livingstone, Zambia – and then take a quick van ride into Choma! Though I know as soon as our feet hit the Zambian soil, they are going to be running, I still sit here in anticipation of the small things that can’t be found elsewhere. It’s the smells of the market, red dirt that will stain every single pair of my shoes, bright white smiles that beam on the verge of laughter, the first sight of friends I have missed, and the buzz that comes from knowing God is anxious to move and encounter us this summer.
To give you a picture of the practical this summer, I will be staying in the same place I stayed last year, at the Fortress Base in Choma. I will join 3 others who live at the base full time. Throughout the summer our housemates will be changing as we receive and release teams back to their homes. When teams are around we will have our cook, Mrs. Botha, prepare our meals, and will catch transportation with our bus driver, Lovemore (both of which are great friends of mine!). When we don’t have teams, eating will be the same as anywhere- groceries from the local grocery store, Spar, and the market for produce.
To give you a picture of the season I am personally stepping into this summer, God has been speaking a few things over me in the last couple months as I have been preparing my heart. While I will do my best to release expectations over what this needs to look like, He has been clear on several things. First, I believe God wants to give me a new heart for the His bride, the church, a new understanding and love for the people within, and stir up a beautiful grace in my own heart. He has put me in a position where I get to influence students and team members, and wants to keep showing me how to use what is already in my hand. He wants to keep growing me to walk with people 1-on-1 and experiment with some teaching. Finally, He continues to remind me that I am His joy, that he beams his radiance in me- and with living joy He wants me to embrace the pure fun before me.
