My name is Mehgan, known in Zambia as ‘Eggs’ due to the unfortunate event that my nickname ‘Madgie’ means eggs in Tonga. God had/has a lot more in store for me this summer then I had first thought. As always He knows better than we do! Ever since I left home it has been one unexpected thing after another. From being stuck in London and Johannesburg due to cancelled flights and a wide range of accommodations, He has been growing me. I feel the theme for my life has been coming from C. S. Lewis’ Mere Chrisianity,
“God is forcing you on or up to a higher level: putting you into situations where you will have to be very much braver, or more patient, or more loving than you ever dreamed of being before.” Amen.??
From no running water, 5 roomates, doing laundry by hand, cooking African food, community outreach, going somewhere I havn’t been, with no one who speaks the language, running community night and teaching middle school Kids’ Club. The list goes on. God is faithful. He has His all-loving way of bringing me way out of my comfort zone and plunging me into things I’ve never done before. I’m learning to lean into Him with everything and to embrace being uncomfortable.
It has been awesome to be a part of some of the different ministries here in Choma, Zambia. I’m a part of OVC (orphans and voulnerable children). In this ministry we visit the families of the sponserd children, pray with them and get to know them. We are in charge of organizing Kid’s Club, which is like VBS, but every Wednesdays afternoon. We get to choose the games and activities and decide on the lessons. I am in the 13-21ish age range. I desire these young people to have a better understanding of Jesus and the love He has for us.
I am on the team that runs Community Night. On Tuesday we have a worship and fellowship service and we have opened it up to the community. Somehow I am one of the people who emcee this event.
I also help with an Adult Discipleship Class on Fridays with some elderly people. It has been interesting because the woman who leads it has not yet been there when we’ve led it, so we have been figuring it out as we go. Being in this ministry is fun because I have realized how much I enjoy being with elderly people. Though I still dont know what they are saying half the time, it is fun just to watch them interact and think on scriptures and to translate it for eachother.
It has been so awesome having different teachers here to learn from! We learned about Identity, Freedom and Purpose! All topics totally confirming my belief and just how great God is! There is so much to learn and I look forward to all the coming weeks and topics. I know that God so much in store for me! He continues to flood me with His love and grace. Im so excited to see all that this summer holds! I cant even imagine!
